Anglo - Saxon period (450 A.D - 1066 A.D)

• It is the oldest period in English literature.
• First epic of this period is Beowulf. It has been discovered as script but there is no signature of the author. So the author of this book is yet to be unknown. It is a narrative poem about three thousand lines. It was written about 650 A.D.
• Caedmon and Cynewulf were the two great poets of the Anglo - Saxon period.
• Venerable Bade was the first historian in English literature. He was the father of English learning. 
• Henry - 1 was famous for his literary works in this period.

King Alfred The Great (849 A.D - 899 A.D)

• Alfred was the king of Wassex. He was popularly known as king Alfred the great or the great Alfred. 
• Alfred the great is sometimes regarded as "The founder of English prose".
